A note attached to an herbarium specimen collected
in Peru in 1969 reads, ('Narcotic, used to
induce sleep" (von Reis and Lipp 1982, 20*). The
principal agent of the allergologically efficacious
plant is thought to be 5-heptadecatrin-8(Z),11 (Z),
14(Z)-benzylresorcinol (Roth et al. 1994, 559*). A
related Montrichardia species is used as an
ayahuasca additive.
